The Alpine Descent in Annecy

The Alpine Descent in Annecy
Each year, the old town of Annecy hosts an unmissable event for lovers of tradition, folklore, and festivities: La Descente des Alpages! It celebrates the arrival of autumn and the return of herds from the mountain pastures to the valley. This year, La Descente des Alpages will take place on Saturday 12th October, from 9 am to 6 pm. Here’s a little more information…

The History of La Descente des Alpages

La Descente des Alpages is a traditional event that takes place in Annecy, particularly in the streets of its old town. It highlights the customs and Alpine heritage of the region in a festive and friendly atmosphere. The descent refers to the return of herds of cows, goats, and sheep from the mountain pastures to the valley in autumn – before the cold and snow reach the highlands. This ancient practice, known as "désalpe," once marked the end of summer and was a significant event in the lives of local farmers.

An Outdoor Spectacle

Bronze bells, flower crowns… the animals are adorned with traditional decorations. The local farmers and breeders wear traditional costumes and guide the herds through the streets of the town, offering spectators a unique experience to (re)discover the cultural richness of the region.

(Re)Discovering the Local Delicacies

During La Descente des Alpages, artisans showcase their craftsmanship: woodworking, copperwork, pottery… and local products: beers, Génépi, liqueurs, wine, pastries, and even tartiflette… there's something for all food lovers! In addition to tasting, this event also offers the opportunity to try several ancestral activities passed down through generations, such as cheese-making or creating
