The History of La Descente des Alpages
La Descente des Alpages is a traditional event that takes place in Annecy, particularly in the streets of its old town. It highlights the customs and Alpine heritage of the region in a festive and friendly atmosphere.
The descent refers to the return of herds of cows, goats, and sheep from the mountain pastures to the valley in autumn – before the cold and snow reach the highlands. This ancient practice, known as "désalpe," once marked the end of summer and was a significant event in the lives of local farmers.
An Outdoor Spectacle
Bronze bells, flower crowns… the animals are adorned with traditional decorations. The local farmers and breeders wear traditional costumes and guide the herds through the streets of the town, offering spectators a unique experience to (re)discover the cultural richness of the region.
(Re)Discovering the Local Delicacies
During La Descente des Alpages, artisans showcase their craftsmanship: woodworking, copperwork, pottery… and local products: beers, Génépi, liqueurs, wine, pastries, and even tartiflette… there's something for all food lovers!
