The Music Day 2024: A Global and Local
Celebration in Annecy
Every June 21st is a symphony of
musical discoveries and shared moments. Initiated in 1982 by Jack Lang, then
Minister of Culture, and Maurice Fleuret, Director of Music and Dance, this
celebration honors music in all its forms, from professional to amateur, free
of charge, for everyone's enjoyment.
Looking Back at the History of a Global Event
In 1981, a survey revealed that 5 million French
people played a musical instrument, but few had the opportunity to share their
passion. This inspired the idea of the Fête de la Musique: a celebration of
music for everyone, held on June 21, the summer solstice. From its first
edition in 1982, the event was an immediate success, with musicians taking over
streets, bars, and kiosks, and thousands joining the festivities until late at
night.
An International Expansion
Starting in 1985, the Fête de la Musique began
to be exported abroad. In less than 10 years, it was present in 85 countries,
and today, it is celebrated in 120 countries across more than a thousand
cities. This global enthusiasm reflects the universality of music and the joy
it brings.
